The Cimaruta ["sprig of Rue"] is a very old Italian portafortuna [good luck charm] rooted in the ancient religions of Southern Italy. Like many of the lasting ancient symbols and beliefs, The Cimaruta design eventually took on certain symbols of Catholicism.
The Romans wore the symbol or hung it above a baby’s crib or bed as a talisman to ward off malevolent magic and the evil eye.
The branch of rue is divided into three stems symbolizing the three forms of the goddess Diana. Various charms appear on the rue design, each having its own meaning.
The main symbols here represent the goddess as Hekate [the key], Diana [the moon]. There's also a heart [for love] as well as a rooster [representing a watchful guardian].
Each Cimaruta Pendant is approximately 1.3" across. Made of clean silver alloy [contains neither nickel nor lead]. Includes 18" silver-plated chain.
